Looking Back: Paris Hilton's Candid Jailhouse Conversation with Barbara Walters

Reflecting on Paris Hilton's candid conversation with Barbara Walters about her time in jailβ€”a moment that shifted her public imageβ€”offers a unique look at personal growth.

On a Sunday afternoon back in 2007, I received an unexpected collect call from jail. At the time, Paris Hilton was serving a sentence, and as is standard protocol for inmates, she had to call collect. The situation was surreal: I was already on the phone with her mother, Kathy Hilton, when Paris broke in on the other line. Hearing our conversation, Paris asked to speak with me directly.

She sounded drained but remarkably clear-headed. When I asked how she was coping, she replied, “I’m hanging in there,” though she added, “I feel as if I’m a different person. I’ve dropped my appeal. I don’t want to cause any more problems.”

Addressing reports about her behavior, she clarified that she hadn't been screaming or sobbing as rumored. Instead, she explained, “I was not eating or sleeping. I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage. I was not myself. It was a horrible experience.”

When I pressed her on how she felt she had changed, her response was unexpectedly vulnerable. “I’m not the same person I was,” she said. “I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young women who look up to me. I know now that I can make a difference, that I have the power to do that. I have been thinking that I want to do different things when I am out of here. I have become much more spiritual. God has given me this new chance.”

At the time, she expressed a heartfelt desire to give back, particularly in the fields of breast cancer awareness and advocacy. This turning point remains a fascinating example of how even the most public figures can find clarity during challenging times, finding ways to stay positive, and ultimately, redefining their purpose in life.
